Here’s a great video for both drivers and cyclists to familiar themselves with road rules for cars and bikes.
Are eBike’s legal in Australia?
Yes, eBikes are legal in Australia and you do not require a special licence to own or use one as long as they meet specific regulations which differ per State.
Generally, an electrically power-assisted cycle must have a maximum continued rated power of up to 250 watts (with some exceptions, such as NSW where the limit is 500 watts). This power output must be:
- progressively reduced as the bicycle’s speed increases beyond 6km/h
- cut off when:
- your bicycle reaches a speed of 25km/h
- you stop pedalling and the speed exceeds 6km/h.
- eBikes must not be operated solely by throttle. Throttles are strictly for private property use and should be isolated when riding in public. If the eBike is equipped with a throttle, it must be locked to a maximum speed of 6 km/h. This means the throttle can be used as a start aid to begin your ride and gain some momentum, but once you reach 6 km/h, you must start pedalling and use the pedal assist mode.
Each state has slightly different rules around eBikes so please check the applicable local laws relating to your intended use of the vehicle on roads, footpaths, shared paths, bicycle lanes and bicycle paths.
Can Children ride eBikes?
- Your child can ride a privately owned eBike if it meets the legal requirements of each State and Territory.
- Your child must wear an approved Australian Standards helmet when riding a bike in a public place. It is the law.
- In NSW, Children under 16 and adult riders accompanying and supervising them may ride on the footpath, unless there are signs specifically prohibiting bicycle riding. (Please check the rules for all other State and Territories as this may vary).
- When riding wear light or bright clothing to help other people see you and your child.
- If your child is riding on a footpath or shared path, they (and any adult accompanying them) must keep to the left and give way to any pedestrian on the path.
- Ensure you use your SPADES eBike headlights and blinkers when/as applicable to maximise your visibility and safety on the road.
- Riders must ride safely and obey all road rules.
Helmets
In NSW, bicycle riders must wear an approved helmet that is correctly fitted and fastened.
All bicycle helmets sold in Australia must comply with an approved Australian or overseas standard for bicycle helmets.
Maintenance
eBikes have rapidly gained popularity throughout the world, providing a convenient and environmentally friendly way to travel. However, like any technological innovation, they are not without their challenges. Being aware of common issues and their solutions can improve your riding experience and extend the lifespan of your eBike. Check out our maintenance page for handy tips on maintaining your eBike.
Cleaning
Keeping your eBike clean isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s essential for maintaining performance and longevity. Dirt, grime, and moisture can cause premature wear on components, reduce efficiency, and even lead to electrical malfunctions. Regular cleaning helps prevent rust, ensures smooth operation, and keeps key parts like the chain and gears functioning properly. Plus, a clean e-bike is simply more enjoyable to ride!
